Albertine Rubin’s life was a remarkable tapestry of bravery, unwavering commitment, and boundless love. Born on March 4, 1942, in Fez, Morocco, she entered the world during a period of profound transformation and uncertainty for the Jewish community. In the 1950s, as nationalist movements surged and Morocco approached independence, many Jews faced escalating concerns about their future. Amidst this backdrop, young Albertine emerged as a beacon of hope and resilience.

Demonstrating extraordinary courage, Albertine became an active member of the Jewish underground. Risking her own safety, she orchestrated daring missions to smuggle fellow Jews out of Morocco, ensuring their security and a brighter future. Her clandestine efforts, executed under the constant threat of danger, saved numerous lives and exemplified her steadfast dedication to her people.

Embracing a new chapter, Albertine immigrated to Israel. At a time when the inclusion of women in the Israel Defense Forces was still in its early stages, she did not hesitate to enlist. As one of the pioneering women in the military, she played a vital role in defending and shaping the nascent nation. Despite numerous challenges and societal expectations that might have deterred others, Albertine viewed this as a sacred mission—a chance to actively participate in the construction and protection of her homeland.

Life’s journey then led Albertine to the United States, where she reunited with her sisters in Virginia Beach. Together, they cultivated a family environment rich in unity, love, and shared traditions. Their collective bond not only strengthened their own families but also enriched the broader community with their warmth and solidarity.

Albertine was married to her beloved husband for 55 years, a partnership marked by deep affection and mutual support. Their enduring union served as a foundation for a family filled with love and respect.

Within the Chabad community of Virginia Beach, Albertine became an integral presence. Her radiant smile, boundless motivation, and infectious positive energy graced every women’s event and holiday celebration. She was a source of inspiration, embodying the values of faith, family, and community.

In her later years, Albertine faced health challenges with the same determination that had defined her entire life. When doctors predicted she had only days to live, she made a heartfelt promise to her beloved grandson: she would celebrate his first birthday with him. Drawing upon an inner reservoir of strength, she defied medical expectations. On the evening of his birthday, surrounded by family, she laughed, played, and created a lasting memory of joy and love. The following morning, having fulfilled her promise, Albertine peacefully passed away.

Today, as we commemorate her yahrzeit, we honor not only the remarkable milestones of her life but also the profound personal connections she nurtured. Albertine Rubin’s legacy is a testament to the impact of courage, devotion, and unconditional love. Her story continues to inspire all who were fortunate enough to know her, reminding us of the enduring power of the human spirit.
